For scientist Grégoire Courtine, a broken back need no longer be a barrier to walking again. In what would have seemed a miracle until very recently, the French researcher, who is based in Switzerland, has devised an electronic “bridge” to bypass the site of the back injury, enabling the brains of spinal injury patients to take command of their legs once more – and walk. Using the system, he recently helped seven long-term paraplegic men to stand and walk short distances on crutches.
